This narrative has been floating around animal rescue groups for some time. In fact, you, like me, may have already heard it. It gives me a smile every time I read it.
A young boy was walking with his grandfather at down a deserted beach. The grandfather commented about how many starfish had been washed up on shore and were saturating the beach. The boy knelt down and picked up a starfish, throwing it back into the ocean. The boy then took a few steps down the beach, knelt down again, and threw another starfish into the water. His grandfather told the boy his efforts were pointless, there were too many starfish to save and it wouldn’t make a difference. The grandfather and boy took a few more steps down the beach – the boy knelt down once again responding, “It makes a difference to this one” as he tossed another starfish into the ocean.
