After reading the article, I joined Sparked.com, a site for microvolunteering. What is microvolunteering, you ask?
Microvolunteering gives you the chance to help nonprofits in your spare time. Speak Spanish? Help translate a paragraph. Enjoy design? Critique a new logo. Love technology? Provide computer assistance. Care about a cause? Help nonprofits strategize around outreach. Whatever your interests or skills, you can use them to help nonprofits all over the world. It’s amazing what we can do with our spare time.
I was blown away by how seriously awesome this site is. First, the idea behind it is genius. Finally, a place for nonprofits to post “challenges” for things they need help with (e.g. web/blog design, logo creation, grant research/writing, t-shirt design, fundraising ideas, etc.). On the other end are volunteers who can opt in to respond to these challenges.
When you sign up as a volunteer, you’re asked what causes you would like to follow and what skills you have to offer.
The sign up process was so so so so easy! But, even better, is how easy the site is to work with. I love the simplicity to it all, and I love the community-ness of it all (yes, I just made up a word).
Nonprofits get free services and brainstorming sessions, and volunteers get endless opportunities to build portfolios, network, and give back. It’s a win win!
