How Healthy Women Can Stop Breast Cancer

| July 15, 2010

It’s Thursday, so it’s time for our weekly volunteer opportunity.

About 70 to 80% of women who get breast cancer have no known risk factors, says Susan Love, MD, president of the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, and author of Dr. Susan Love’s Breast Book. “Early detection isn’t the only answer–we have to prevent it in the first place,” she says. Now she’s developed a breakthrough new project, called the Love/Avon Army of Women, to help do just that. Some details:

What: The Army of Women was created to recruit at least 1 million women who want to stop breast cancer in our lifetime.

Who: All women–every age and ethnicity, healthy or with a breast cancer history–can join.

Why: It can be hard for scientists to find women to participate in research about breast cancer, says Love. These studies–espeically those that compare women who’ve never had breast cacner with those who have–are essential to stopping cancer before it starts.

It literally took me less than 5 minutes to sign up. So easy! From here, I’ll just get periodic e-mail updates about various areas they’re in need of volunteered time in. In support of all this, I am adding the widget to my blog…you should, too!
